Seven Day "Beat the Heat" - Part 2

Between Gallup NM & Durango CO we enjoyed high
mountains, green fields, tall trees and water via sprinklers...

along with some interesting rock formations.

We were headed east from Farmington NM to Durango CO

when we spotted an unexpected gem along the way which
turned out to be well worth an unplanned side trip.

It is located in Aztec NM.  Centuries ago it was a central
gathering place and

a thriving cultural capital for ancestral Puebloans.

Mistakenly coined "Aztec" by others, the ancient Pueblo people
lived and flourished at this very sacred and spiritual place.

Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and landmark
to the roots of civilization.

The West Ruin is a three-story 450 room ruin,

which features 900 year old roof timbers that shelter
intact rooms that feature exquisite masonry,

and mysterious T-shaped doorway's.

I see green, better than red...  Elevation Durango 6522'.

As we checked in at LaQuinta Inns & Suites for
our 4 day Durango visit,   I couldn't help notice the
hand crafted wood tables with their turquoise inlay, and

was also impressed with its replication in the lobby carpet.

The hallway carpet to our King suite was also
more than colorful.

Unfortunately about 1 a.m., the hotel fire alarms
blared out and all guests of this 3 story hotel gathered
in the lobby.   The Durango Fire Department arrived within
a minute or two and checked out everything... we went
back to our rooms, but not to sleep.  Twenty minutes later the alarms
went off again and the fire department guys were back within 2
minutes. After 30 minutes they told us they had fixed the faulty
control panel, which caused the alarms to go off.  This
also caused the loss of internet service for 2 days!!!

As we returned to our room on the first floor,
this sign made me giggle!!!  Tomorrow is another day...
