Since we had received our Covid vaccines, we were delighted
to have a visit with our son and daughter-in-law all the way from Hawaii,
which involved the "red-eye" to Seattle and then a short morning flight to Phoenix!!!
The next day we took them out sight seeing...
Canyon Lake is always a scenic trip especially when the weather
starts out looking good.
By the time we got to Fish Creek Overlook (elevation 3000 feet),
the weather was starting to turn cloudy, which was o.k. with me as
the resulting photos are always enhanced by the clouds...
but the excessive wind created a bad hair day for some of us.
That didn't stop us from enjoying each others company
and taking a closer look at the hedgehog cactus spring blooms.
And the shutters continued to click as we looked down into the
fabulous Salt River gorge.
However, the weather took a turn for the worse
.
as we made a mad dash back to the car. We not only had a
bad hair day, but we were pretty wet and cold since we had
no hoods on our light jackets and of course no rain gear!!!
Yes, we actually saw and felt a lot of Arizona rain drops,
which have been almost non-existent, at this elevation, for the past 8 months.
Incidentally, Canyon Lake is only one of four lakes on the
Salt River which is formed by the confluence of the
White River and the Black River in the White Mountains of eastern Gila County.
It flows 200 miles (320 km) in a westerly direction and eventually empties
into the Gila River 15 miles (24 km) west-southwest of
Phoenix and ends up in the Colorado River.
Remember, just click on any photo to get a larger view.
Theodore Roosevelt Dam and Lake are at the east end of this string of lakes.
Next is Apache Lake at Horse Mesa Dam, the Mormon Flat Dam holds back the water
of Canyon Lake and Stewart Mountain Dam creates Saguaro Lake which
you'll see in a subsequent post.
The next day was more leisurely so we headed for the pickleball courts.
Susan is waiting to return the serve. Notice the blue sky!!!
Then Susan and Eric teamed up
and she did a great job of returning a fast ball. They
are tennis players which made them good pickleball players.
Then Don and I got out our
"high places to do list" which were much easier for Eric to
achieve with his 6'3" frame. In fact he only needed two steps
to stand on the kitchen counter but that did't quite leave him
enough space to straighten out his neck!!!
Stay tuned for Part 2...
