Welcome to the Gold King Mine & Ghost Town...
It all began in 1890 . . .
When they dug a 1270 foot mine shaft,
searching for copper, they struck GOLD!
The location was only
1 mile north of the mining town, Jerome, but they became their
own mining camp called “Haynes”.
In 1901, the population was 304! They even had their own
post office from 1908 – 1922.
Or course, the gold ran out and the mine was closed.
Years later, 91 years later to be exact, the area was rediscovered
by Terry & Don Robertson.
The year was 1981 and Dons’ dream was to share with the world
some of the most unique and important icons of the industrial revolution.
Today, the property is filled with vintage transportation: over
180 cars, trucks & motorcycles, including Studebaker’s and Harley’s.
This great sign made me smile as we entered the gift
shop to pay our admission fee... another thing that made us both
smile was when they told us there was no charge to those
over 80!!!
We wandered for a couple of hours... looking at mining equipment, historic
buildings and a Stamp Mill that was used for crushing the ore.
They also had a working sawmill and Blacksmith shop
Signs that use words to convey information and
others that needed no words!!!
Don liked this vehicle and when I asked what it was
he said "read the description" so I'm including it
here for you to read!!!
My favorite was this Dodge Brothers pickup with
wooden spoke rims.
This is a close up of the emblem on the front.
And Don was surprised to see this. He didn't even know
that Packard ever made a truck. Don never owned
a Packard car but his Dad owned 1936 Packard sedan!!!
This was my favorite building, perhaps I should say
Barn. Either way it was pretty elaborate, which is why
it made the it into this story.
I stepped inside the Shoe Repair Shop to get some new
insoles for my size 10's!!!
This sign made you wonder if they actually had a rattlesnake exhibit... NOT
This place had something for everyone, including a
"petting farm" for kids and this pen of kids was very
popular with the visiting kids I saw!!! But not
as popular as a "porky" pig who was so pregnant that
she could hardly move.
What more can I say...
